In spirit of college football kicking off this Friday, with Cal and Hawaii facing off, we have decided to list the top 6 funkiest and most bizarre college mascots.

6. Louisiana Lafayette – Cayenne
As the spirit leader of the Ragin’ Cajuns, the Cayenne was the chosen to represent Louisiana Lafayette. The giant pepper has been embraced by the students, and although a pepper is not exactly intimidating, Cayenne’s face could scare off a few opponents.

5. Dartmouth – Keggy the Keg
Although most people associate kegs and partying with college students, Darthmouth took that idea to another level making Keggy the Keg the unofficial mascot. After dropping their mascot in 2003, students set out to create an interesting mascot, and a few years later, they created Keggy. He makes occasional appearances at sporting events and is a part of the Dartmouth culture. Although Keggy looks more like a Halloween costume, he’s an entertaining character that embodies the typical “college life.”

4. Stanford – Stanford Tree
Stanford has never been able to come up with a mascot. Stanford’s team name is “Cardinal” like the bright red color, and not the bird. They do have an unofficial mascot which is the Stanford Tree. The Tree is the band’s mascot but has been adopted by the students, and it likes to makes appearances in football and basketball games. Other candidates for the band’s mascot included the Steaming Manhole and the French Fry, but the Tree received the most positive feedback and became a permanent fixture. It is one of the more bizarre mascots for sure.

3. Xavier – The Blue Blob
Xavier is one of the few schools out there with two mascots. The official mascot, D’Artagnan The Musketeer, and the iconic Blue Blob. He was designed to be a friendlier mascot, as the musketeer was intimidating to smaller kids. The Blue Blog looks as though he’s a character from Sesame Street, which is probably why he’s so appealing and lovable.

2. Cal State Long Beach Dirtbags – Prospector Pete
Although the mascot is Prospector Pete, the team’s name is the Dirtbags. The name refers to the baseball program’s style of play. In 1989, they did not have a home field, so they practiced at local all-dirt Pony League field that would leave them bloody and filthy. They actually ended up advancing to the College Worlds Series that season and adopted the name. Even though the name is something they are really proud of because of how it came about, it leaves most people confused as “dirtbags” usually has a negative connotation.

1. Delta State – Mr. Okra
Another one of the few schools that has two mascots is Delta State. The official mascot is the Stateman, and the unofficial mascot is Mr. Okra. Although both mascots show up in sporting events, the Fighting Okra seems to be the more popular one of the two. There are few theories of where the Okra came from, but it is said that some sports players were looking got a more intimidating mascot than the Stateman, and Mr. Okra fit that description. Not sure who thinks that vegetable make fear-inducing mascots, but Mr. Okra is definitely unique.
